"Last Light is the UK based Aotearoa/New Zealand duo of Dean Brown and Ben Spiers. Celestial Mechanics follows on from the late 2024 releases A Serrated Sky (C/Site) and A Bridge Over the Lagoon (Carbon / What Lies Beneath). While A Serrated Sky feels like a truly cosmic excursion, and A Bridge Over the Lagoon feels firmly rooted in Dean and Ben’s influences (Sandoz Lab Technicians, Doramaar, Alastair Galbriath, and Flies Inside The Sun, as well as acts coming out of Japan, such as Chie Mukai, Kousokuya and Taj Mahal Travellers), Celestial Mechanics sees the pair melding the foundations of their previous records. Opener Cinder Cone’s percussive element sparks reminders of Antony Milton’s environmental recordings, whilst its searing guitar drone brings to mind some of the more fried moments on Flying Saucer Attack’s In Search of Spaces. The optimism that laced A Bridge… is tempered a little on Celestial Mechanics - Old Man in particular, suggests an enviable contentedness. Stationary Jets closes the record in a way that is subdued and not too dissimilar to Pelt or Vibracathedral Orchestra at their most bare. Seemingly a record of contradictions – one foot firmly planted on the ground, whilst one hand reaches for space – Celestial Mechanics is the sound of Spiers and Brown branching out from the confines of their influences and firmly establishing their own voice. There are no embers here, this Last Light shines bright." - Bunkland
